In an article posted at The Bangswitch, a contributor identified only as “Matt,” a “full time Deputy Sheriff that has been on the job since 1996,” elaborated on a recent shooting investigation during which it became clear a resident shot a would-be burglar with a gun many California lawmakers would like to see outlawed.
The apartment complex at which the incident occurred has hosted its share of violent crimes in the past, Matt explained, though “this one was definitely different.”

What began as a 9-1-1 call reporting a “crazy, drugged out of his mind white guy … running around a shopping center trying to fight people and steal things” ended at the nearby complex where the suspect was last seen.
“As cops pull into the complex,” he wrote, “they hear a gunshot. Crazy white guy runs out and flops on the ground with gunshot wounds to both legs.”
Shortly thereafter, Matt confirmed “a black male teenager comes over and tells cops his uncle just shot a guy in their apartment.”

Investigators concluded the suspect “booted open the apartment door armed with a large shard of broken glass and began yelling at the five … residents inside that he is going to cut their throats,” he continued.
Meanwhile, the resident grabbed his gun to defend his family against the threat. He shot the suspect with a vintage M1 Carbine rifle containing a 30-round magazine. Such a weapon, Matt explained, would be classified as an assault weapon under proposed legislation and contains a high-capacity magazine outlawed by bans in California and other states. Since the gun used was owned by the shooter prior to the ban’s passage, however, he was allowed to keep it.
The fact that lawmakers would like to take this gun out of law-abiding citizens’ hands is not the only reason Matt said local media largely ignored this story.
He concluded that the incident did not support a prevailing narrative because the “[e]vil, racist white cops did not arrest a black man who shot a crazy, drugged up white guy with an evil semi-auto ‘assault rifle,’ the very type of gun that is never used in a home defense scenario.”
As for the shooter, Matt confirmed he was questioned at the scene and released.
