For the second time this school year, Commack High School finds itself making headlines because of offensive T-shirts sported by students.
The latest incident occurred at a house party during spring break last week. In a photo posted on social media and obtained by News 12, two students can be seen wearing red shirts with the word “Auschwitz” printed above a swastika symbol.
Commack school officials say they are investigating the incident and “will impose discipline related to this where legally permissible.”
But because the anti-Semitic T-shirts were not worn to a school sponsored activity, district officials say ”the school is limited in its ability to address this matter.”
The shirts, worn by one boy and one girl while playing a drinking game, also include the words “hit the showers,” CBS 2 reported, a reference to the Nazis sending Jews to their deaths during the Holocaust.
It is unclear who originally posted the photo on social media, but the black eye for the school district comes just seven months after a group of Commack High School seniors were pictured wearing T-shirts that spelled out the word “rape” following a senior class photo shoot.
District officials maintain that the actions of a few students are not representative of the student body at Commack High School, which was recently named one of the top 100 public high schools in New York.
