A document from 2011 that discussed opposition research on critics of radical Islam was posted online after it became one of 2,500 files stolen from billionaire financier George Soros' Open Society Foundations.

The Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank, operated a project to conduct "high quality opposition research" to fight against "anti-Muslim xenophobia and to promote tolerance," according to the Daily Caller.

The think tank's project was aimed at putting together a group of "knowledgeable and credible" experts who could provide information on topics relating to radical Islam.

The experts targeted by the project included activist Pamela Gellar, Center for Security Policy president Frank Gaffney, Jihad Watch directorRobert Spencer, author David HorowitzDaniel Pipes, Cliff May of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and now-congressional candidate Liz Cheney, former Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter.

Soros's foundation funded the project with $200,000, among other grants that totaled $500,000.

The project also planned to explore organizations that could have stirred up "Islamophobia."

"We need a clearer understanding of what by all indications is a well-orchestrated and well-financed system by which right-wing think tanks, pundits, and politicians are able to introduce false narratives and flawed research into the media cycle and use their misinformation to manipulate public opinion and thwart progressive counterterrorism policies," the memo read.

The Center works on projects that it calls "progressive ideas for a strong, just, and free America," according to its website.
