An armed resource officer at a school in Maryland is believed to have stopped a shooting which injured two students Tuesday.
The gunman, identified as 17-year-old Great Mills High School student Austin Wyatt Rollins, injured two students with a handgun when he opened fire in a hallway around 7:55AM.
The student gunman died after he “exchange gunfire” with the officer, who was in pursuit after the two students were shot.
One of the students, a 16-year-old female, is in critical condition, while the other 14-year-old male victim is reported to be in good condition.
The shooting prompted the school to be locked down and evacuated, and initiated a mass response protocol, which school district officials described as “orderly.”
While not specifically calling for gun control, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan used the shooting as an opportunity to promote the “conversation about school safety.”
“It must serve as a call to action,” he said in a statement.
St. Mary’s County Sheriff Tim Cameron says it will take days to determine whether the school resource officer’s bullet was responsible for stopping Rollins.
“In the days to come, through a detailed investigation, we will be able to determine if our SRO’s round struck the shooter,” the sheriff stated.
In a tweet, ABC 7’s Brad Bell wrote the officer “took action to end threat.”
The hero resource officer has not been identified.
